Dan Shoobridge Wins Hillingdon Winter Series Race 2

Hillingdon Winter Series Race – Cat 3/4. 45mins + 3laps.

About 35 riders arrived on the start line today. Feeing okay despite few mechanical issues about 20 mins before the start; anyway they seemed to resolve themselves with a little help from ‘Papa Shoob’.

Necked a gel, had a few sips of water and with a ‘good luck, don’t crash’ from the commissaries, the race was under way.

Things initially moved along quite nicely, a few breaks that went early very quickly got shut down. About 15 mins into the race a group of two went off the front and the pace of the pack went up by quite a bit. Another two riders jumped off the front of the pack to chase them down, I went with them. The second man of the three wasn’t holding the wheel so I went round him and caught the two at the front with the other rider in our break. Now about five to ten seconds ahead of the pack there were four of us. Off we went and managed to create about half a laps lead by the 40 minute mark.

Then three laps to go, cat and mouse. One of the four tried to go and I chased him and held his wheel, the other two still in contact. Two laps on and I’m on the front with all 3 sitting on my wheel. Now the last lap, all three still sitting on my wheel until the penultimate corner. Last corner now in sight I look behind and hear ‘ click click click’ someone’s going and they did! Boom! Big effort from one of the guys! He creates a big gap and I just put my head down and chase his wheel. At about 150m to go he stops moving away and I start to gain on him, I looked behind the for the other two but they had been dropped . Fifty meters to go I’m on his wheel. Last twenty meters I made a move and pip him by half a wheel on the line!

First win, done! Happy days. Anyway all four of us shake hands and say well done; I think we’re all pretty happy with the result and opening up a huge gap from the pack.

Overall feeling happy and feeling strong for future races and looking to be hitting 2nd cat before the season starts! Onwards and upwards.
