Emma wood clinches her 3rd cat licence in style with a win at the women’s twilight criterium. Read her race report below:
I raced my second race at the Cyclopark closed circuit in Kent on Thursday 31st March. As part of the Women’s Twilight Series (3rd and 4th category), the race started at 7pm when the sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon. The circuit was very exposed to wind and I was racing in a small field of just over 20 riders. On top of this, I was nursing a knee injury and the tail-end of a virus, so I knew it would be a waiting game, sitting in at the back of the bunch before 50 minutes was up and the last 5 laps showed up on the board. Despite a few twitchy riders, I held my nerve and began chasing down the two race leaders who sprinted off the front at the start of the final lap. By then, I knew third place was in the bag and coming round the final corner into the hill, I pushed hard, drawing the two riders back. I was amazed to ride quickly past them with a few hundred metres to go and then cross the finish line at the top of the hill with room to spare! A great venue and really friendly group of cyclists – I hope to go back and race there again this season, now with a 3rd cat. license.
